The Unique Role of the Security Science Journal

The Security Science Journal (SSJ) is a pioneering publication that goes beyond the traditional boundaries of Security studies or Intelligence studies. While many journals address security primarily from political science, international relations, or area-studies perspectives, SSJ is the first academic platform explicitly dedicated to advancing Security Science as an autonomous scientific discipline.

Unlike conventional journals focusing on fragmented aspects of defense, intelligence, or international security, SSJ promotes a holistic, multidisciplinary, and scientific approach to security. Its mission is to analyze threats and vulnerabilities and establish the theoretical, methodological, and practical foundations of Security Science. This emerging discipline integrates insights from political science, sociology, law, technology, cybernetics, military sciences, and psychology into one coherent framework.

SSJ’s truly international character further reinforces this uniqueness. The editorial board brings together more than one hundred experts from over forty countries, ensuring a diversity of perspectives rarely seen in specialized journals. In addition, SSJ embraces open access, ethical publishing practices, and transparent peer review, which distinguishes it as a credible and globally relevant forum for academic dialogue.

The recognition of SSJ’s importance is also reflected in its indexation. The journal is included in the Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ), one of the most respected global platforms for open access publishing, which guarantees transparency, accessibility, and compliance with the highest publishing standards. SSJ is also indexed in ERIH PLUS, the European Reference Index for the Humanities and Social Sciences, which affirms its relevance and quality within the European academic space. Furthermore, SSJ uses Crossref DOI services, ensuring all articles are globally visible, citable, and integrated into the international research infrastructure.

In contrast to other journals that remain limited to regional or thematic scopes, SSJ aspires to become the cornerstone of a new scientific paradigm: Security Science. It is not only a journal that publishes articles—it is a platform that shapes the identity of a discipline, educates the next generation of scholars, and sets standards for research and practice in security worldwide.

We publish high-quality, refereed papers two to three times per year. Special issues are published occasionally to cover specific topics within the journal's scope in detail. Papers reporting original research or extended versions of the already published conference/journal papers are welcome. Articles for publication are selected through peer review to ensure originality, relevance, and readability. "SECURITY SCIENCE JOURNAL" features high-quality original papers in English. Papers and book reviews addressing a diverse range of topics in the field of a multidisciplinary approach in security science will be welcomed by the Editorial Board.

SSJ Special issues

SSJ Special issues are occasionally published as additional thematic-driven issues, following all quality requirements of standard issues. Additional criteria that apply to SSJ Special issues are the following:

  • The Editor-in-Chief is responsible for the content of the entire journal and all its editions, including special issues.
  • SSJ Special issues must fall within the scope of the journal
  • SSJ always ensures that guest editors’ credentials are checked and approved.
  • Special issue articles have the same editorial oversight as regular ones and are handled similarly, including external peer review. More specifically, papers submitted to a special issue by the guest editor(s) are managed under an independent review process and comprise no more than 25% of the issue’s total.
  • Special issue articles are clearly labelled in the header of the corresponding SSJ Special issue.

In general, SSJ uses selected external reviewers in addition to the editorial checks for all editions, including special issues.

"SECURITY SCIENCE JOURNAL" hopes that Researchers, Research scholars, Academicians, etc. will use this journal publication to develop interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary security topics.
